Shakespears Sisters - "Hello (Turn Your Radio On)"

Un successo del 1992 ma praticamente atemporale (come tutti quelli della nostra hit parade, del resto!). Le Shakespears Sisters erano Siobhan Fahey e Marcella Detroit che, oltre a capitanare la band, apparentemente componevano molti dei testi e della musica. Ma Siobhan (che aveva lasciato Bananarama) era sposata con Dave A. Stewart (Eurythmics, Spiritual Cowboys) e, sebbene Stewart negasse ogni suo coinvolgimento nell'album (Hormonally Yours, il loro secondo), c'è sicuramente la sua (innegabile) influenza in quest'opera.
La canzone "Hello" rimane comunque la cosa migliore partorita dalle Shakespears Sisters. E anche il video è assai suggestivo.

Tom Petty: formidabile cantautore di sangue indiano che, insieme ai suoi Heartbreakers, ha sfornato una caterva di album geniali (Into the Great Wide Open rimane a tutt'oggi il mio preferito) e che è in gran parte responsabile dell'idea di mettere insieme artisti del rango di Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne e Roy Orbison per formare insieme a loro i Traveling Wilburys, formazione entrata nella leggenda del rock. 

Nato e cresciuto nel nord della Florida, Tom Petty abbandonò la scuola a 17 anni per unirsi al gruppo Mudcrutch, in cui suonavano il chitarrista  Mike Campbell e il tastierista Benmont Tench. Nel 1970 i Mudcrutch si trasferirono a Los Angeles nella speranza di ottenere un contratto, ma finirono per sciogliersi. Tom Petty, che aveva firmato per la Shelter Records, si esibì con diverse bands prima di riunirsi con Campbell e Tench (1975). In quel periodo i due vecchi compagni stavano lavorando insieme al bassista Ron Blair e al drummer Stan Lynch sotto il nome "Heartbreakers". La Shelter accettò generosamente di "incorporarli" a Petty e da qui nacque il gruppo Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (1976).

                     

Il loro era un rock'n'roll a tratti gentile pur se di fattura garage e con testi dai risvolti critici. Dapprima l'America fece orecchie da mercante. In Inghilterra invece, dove il quintetto si era recato per accompagnare in tournée Nils Lofgren, l'accoglienza fu ottima: il loro debutto Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers si piazzò nella U.K. Top 30. Incoraggiata da questo successo, la loro label fece maggiore pubblicità all'LP negli U.S.A. e lanciò il single "Breakdown", che raggiunse la Top 40, mentre un'altra song, "American Girl", divenne un tormentone delle emittenti locali.
Poco dopo accadde che l'ABC, compagnia-madre della Shelter, venne comprata dalla MCA Records. Petty cercò di rinegoziare il contratto ma alla MCA le sue pretese sembrarono eccessive. La band si ritrovò allora a lavorare sotto l'egida della Backstreet Records, che faceva comunque capo allo stesso colosso MCA. L'album Damn the Torpedoes fu realizzato alla fine del 1979.

Il successo che seguì era in parte inatteso: due milioni di copie vendute, con un paio di 45 giri ("Don't Do Me Like That" e "Refugee") che scalarono vertiginosamente l'apposita classifica. Ma ecco sorgere altri problemi con la casa discografica. Secondo la MCA, l'album successivo, Hard Promises, doveva essere venduto al prezzo di 9,98 dollari (allora - correva l'anno 1981 - una cifra non indifferente). Petty puntò i piedi, minacciò di ritirare il prodotto da tutti i negozi e organizzò addirittura una protesta dei fans. La MCA dovette arrendersi, mettendo in commercio Hard Promises per 8,98 dollari. L'album stravendette (fu disco di platino) e il single "The Waiting" divenne un hit.
Nello stesso anno Tom Petty produsse Drop Down and Get Me, che sanciva il ritorno di Del Shannon, mai obliata icona del rock'n'roll. Inoltre compose "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", che cantò in duetto con Stevie Nicks, ex cantante dei Fleetwood Mac. La canzone si trova nell'album della Nicks Bella Donna, registrato con il supporto degli Heartbreakers.

               

Per il successivo Southern Accents, Petty & Co. impiegarono ben tre anni, tre anni non solo di lavoro ma anche di ripensamenti e rabbie assortite. Avevano ingaggiato come produttore Dave Stewart degli Eurythmics allo scopo di esplorare nuovi territori musicali o, meglio, per allargare i propri orizzonti sonori. Southern Accents contiene brani soul, psichedelici e new wave, ma (o forse proprio per questo) non riesce a risultare di facile ascolto. Nonostante ciò, grazie anche al successo del single "Don't Come Around Here No More", fu insignita del disco di platino. Con buona pace di Tom Petty che un giorno, riascoltando i nastri con gli arrangiamenti, per la scontentezza mollò un pugno a una parete fratturandosi la mano.
Ed ecco il 1986: l'anno della stretta collaborazione con il grande Bob Dylan. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers ebbero il privilegio di accompagnare il menestrello di Duluth nel suo tour mondiale. Dylan ricambiò scrivendo per loro "Jammin' Me", ballata inserita in Let Me Up (I've Had Enough).
Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) non ricevette umanimi consensi; tutt'altro. Ma questo fu il minore dei mali nella vita di Tom Petty. Infatti, poco dopo l'uscita dell'album un incendio distrusse completamente la sua villa. Lui, sua moglie e le loro due figlie riuscirono a salvarsi con parecchia fortuna. Ma nell'incendio il cantante perse molti dei suoi ricordi più cari.

 

Nel 1988 Petty si ritrovò a far parte dei Traveling Wilburys insieme a Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison e Jeff Lynne. Cinque musicisti di bravura stellare che si riunivano - apparentemente in anonimato - per suonare divertendosi... Il risultato non poteva che essere eccezionale. Difatti, Traveling Wilburys - Vol. 1 è un capolavoro a sé stante del soft rock di tutti i tempi. 

Poco dopo il cantante fece uscire il suo primo "album da solista" (in realtà vi parteciparono quasi tutti gli Heartbreakers): Full Moon Fever. Prodotto da Lynne, Full Moon Fever vinse ben tre dischi di platino e generò gli hits "I Won't Back Down", "Runnin' Down a Dream" e "Free Fallin'".

Nel 1990 fu la volta del secondo colpo di genio dei Traveling Wilburys (curiosamente chiamato Vol. 3), i quali, sebbene ora purtroppo orfani della loro "voce d'angelo" Roy Orbison, ottennero un altro successo interplanetario. Quindi, nella primavera del 1991, uscì Into the Great Wide Open, capolavoro firmato Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers e prodotto - come Full Moon Fever - da Jeff Lynne. Nuovamente disco di platino!

Dopo Greatest Hits (1993), contenente due canzoni nuove prodotte da Rick Rubin e di cui una, "Mary Jane's Last Dance", raggiunse la Top 20, Petty decise di slegarsi dalla MCA per passare alla Warner Bros. Si dice che il deal fosse già stato programmato nel 1989 e che il biondo rocker avesse incassato la cifra record di 20 milioni di dollari. 

Nel 1982 Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers pubblicarono Long After Dark, che si piazzò al terzo posto della Top Ten. Subito dopo, Ron Blair decise di abbandonare il gruppo e venne rimpiazzato da Howie Epstein, ex bassista di John Hiatt.

Nel 1994 anche il batterista Stan Lynch lasciò gli Heartbreakers, proprio mentre Petty stava registrando il suo secondo "solo", sempre sotto la supervisione di Rubin e sempre circondato da alcuni componenti della band. Il titolo: Wildflowers. Oltre a vincere tre dischi di platino, Wildflowers  "partorì" gli hits di successo "You Don't Know How It Feels", "You Wreck Me" e "It's Good to Be King".


Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers si "riunirono" nel 1996 per registrare la colonna sonora di She's the One (Il senso dell'amore), film del giovane regista Edward Burns. Tre anni dopo tornarono all'apice con Echo, seguito nel 2002 da The Last DJ, album infarcito di accuse all'indirizzo degli ingordi discografici (su ispirazione di Elvis Costello). Highway Companion è invece del 2006. Lo stile è sempre lo stesso: un rock naturalmente blueseggiante, a tratti hard ma alla maniera degli Stones, a tratti piacevolmente - e non baggianamente - poppeggiante.




 Nella sua ormai lunga carriera Tom Petty ha  dimostrato di volersi sempre muovere in determinati circoli e frequentare determinate persone (sempre le stesse: quelle fidate). Ma nessuno - credo - poteva prevedere la sorpresa che il cantautore ha voluto riservarci nel 2007. In quell'anno Petty decide di ricucire insieme i vecchi Mudcrutch (ovvero lui stesso, gli "Heartbreakers" Mike Campbell e Benmont Tench, e i membri originali Tom Leadon e Randall Marsh) permettendo finalmente alla vecchia band, dopo ben 30 anni (!), di debuttare con un proprio album. Mudcrutch (questo anche il titolo del disco) è musica da ascoltare e da ballare, un po' come quella degli Wilburys: "a little bit country, a little bit folk, a little bit rock and roll". Un divertimento assicurato, insomma, giacché i singoli musicisti, nel momento di registrare, non hanno pensato tanto alle vendite, quanto più a suonare in nome dei "bei tempi che furono" e della "meravigliosa amicizia che ancora è".

Amen Corner - "(If Paradise Is) Half So Nice"


 

Questa è la canzone con cui Andy Fairweather Low di solito conclude i suoi concerti.

Il gallese si muove nel business musicale ormai da mezzo secolo. Fu per tre anni cantante degli storici Amen Corner, formazione che nel 1969 ebbe successo in tutto il mondo con - appunto -  "(If Paradise Is) Half So Nice" (dall'hit italianissimo "Il paradiso", di Mogol-Battisti).

Gli Amen Corner non furono un semplice gruppo pop britannico: all'inizio fecero blues e jazz e, dopo il loro scioglimento, i componenti rimasero fedeli alle forme "impegnate" di musica. Il sassofonista Allan Jones formò Judas Jump mentre il chitarrista-cantante Fairweather Low convinse Dennis Bryon (percussioni), Blue Weaver (tastiere), Clive Taylor (basso) e Neil Jones (chitarra) a spartire con lui l'esperienza di una nuova band, che chiamarono Fair Weather. I Fair Weather ebbero successo con "Natural Sinner" (il brano scalò la UK hit parade nel 1970) e fecero appena in tempo a produrre un album prima di sciogliersi, anche a causa del passaggio di Blue Weaver ai celebri The Strawbs.

Fairweather Low si imbarcò quindi in una carriera solista che sfociò nell'hit "Wide Eyed and Legless" del 1975.

Dopo aver collaborato alla realizzazione del travagliatissimo album degli Who dal titolo Who Are You, divenne un membro dei gruppi di Eric Clapton, George Harrison e - per ben 27 anni - lavorò con Roger Waters durante la carriera post-Pink Floyd di questi. In studio di registrazione Andy collaborò, tra gli altri, con Leo Sawyer, la Albion Band, Gerry Rafferty e Richard & Linda Thompson. In seguito suonò con i mitici Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, prima di imbarcarsi in una serie di tournée con i Low Riders, la sua attuale band.

Il repertorio di Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders è vasto: dal pop al rock'n'roll attraverso blues, country e gospel; e tutte le loro gigs vengono concluse da (come poteva essere altrimenti?) "(If Paradise Is) Half So Nice", canzone che la platea spontaneamente accompagna con un "lalalala-lalalala..." a tutta gola.
